The Lightning Bug

This is my favorite searching nymph of all time and, in #14 pearlescent green, is responsible for a lot of nice trout on the truckee during the summer months. Generally this is tied in with a pheasant fiber tail and legs on a straight shanked hook-- but this is the form I've settled on: quick to tie and effective:

MATERIALS:
thread: Danville black 6/0 (or other)
hook: #12-20 tiemco 2457
bead: gold colored tungsten to fit
body: mylar tinsel (pearl shown)
ribbing: small ultrawire (or x-small for #20's)
Thorax: Arizona synthetic peacock
or similar dubbing

More recently I decided to try other colors of mylar tinsel and have caught fish on almost all colors. In the fall the red color in #12's & 14's can be a nice reprieve to tying red copper johns, in the winter the black and the blue colors in #18's & 20's make for an effective attractor midge that may (slightly) out perform your standard zebra midge. As for the violet I haven't used it much but on my last two trips to pyramid it caught fish-- shown below are sizes #14-20 in five flavors of utc holographic mylar tinsel:

  2. Brian,

These type flies are some of my favorites also. I need to fish these more this summer. I like a red one, it just looks cool.

  4. That's a great looking box you got going there. That purple color you got going there looks mighty fishy.
